Stuttgart starts 5G revolution: LITFASS columns with fast internet!

Feuerseeplatz, 70174 Stuttgart, Deutschland - in Stuttgart, it's really round with 5G! On Thursday to the delight of many mobile phone users, the first litstrate column with a Vodafone mobile phone antenna will be put into operation on Thursday. This innovative solution is a real highlight in Baden-Württemberg and marks a step towards future-proof mobile phone supply. The special thing about it? The city barriers are not only decorative elements of the city, but also full-fledged mobile phone stations that make the fast 5G network accessible to everyone. Vodafone even plans to install five more of these pillars in Stuttgart by the end of the year and to convert up to 100 advertising columns in the long term. Mobile internet supply is not only improved, but also offers enormous potential in busy streets and squares.

As Michael Jungwirth from Vodafone explains, the advantage of the petrol columns is that the retrofitting is faster than the construction of conventional mobile phone masts. These compact stations are ideal for offering a download speed of up to 500 Mbit/s at a radius of around 400 meters. This is a real performance boost for everyone who accesses the 5G network.

a good start for the 5G LIT barrier columns

The official opening of the first lit barrier was carried out by Thomas Strobl, the deputy prime minister, and other representatives. This pillar cannot be overlooked at a height of 4.79 meters and 1.62 meters. It is not only well illuminated, but also has a power connection, which makes the furnishings perfect for mobile phone technology. The installation of the technology in cooperation with ILG external advertising is already on the plan, and the next notes worth mentioning are the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the MHP Arena Stuttgart and the Bad Cannstatt station.

Total Vodafone currently operates 235 mobile radio stations in Stuttgart. In Düsseldorf, these petrol columns have even been used since autumn 2021, where almost 6000 connections with 5G smartphones can be reached via the columns every day. This shows that these digital contacts not only act as advertising space, but also as an important infrastructure. The positive results from Düsseldorf show that it is time to think of this solution in other cities.

many options with 5G for the public communities

But the Litfaße columns are just the beginning. 5G technology also offers great potential for the public sector, as can be seen from the analyzes of PWC. Municipalities have been called up to continuously examine applications for the use of this technology. Integrated IoT applications could, for example, significantly improve traffic monitoring, air quality measurement or intelligent street lighting. Saving travel times could also reduce costs in municipal households.

By using drones, employees of the construction and green space office could also capture the condition of streets and green areas more easily and more easily. The possibilities seem almost unlimited because 5G offers the necessary basis for new services and innovative business models - and all of this with impressive energy efficiency.

So it is clear: the 5G LIT barrier pillars in Stuttgart are not only a technical piece of jewelry, but also a step towards smarter and networked cities. The future has started-and not in a few years, but here and now in the state capital of Baden-Württemberg.
