Stuttgart starts 5G revolution: Advertising columns bring super fast network!
In Stuttgart, something happens: The first advertising 5G mobile radio antenna from Vodafone is online. This is not only a step towards modern infrastructure, but also a chic move in the cooperation with the city administration. By the end of the year, five other such innovative advertising columns are to be created, with the aim of increasing to 100 in the long term. These will be a supplement to the existing 235 mobile radio stations in Stuttgart, which operates Vodafone. The streets of the Swabia will soon become more digital and more powerful!
The illuminated advertising pillars are not only beautiful to look at, but also functional. Many already have a power connection, which facilitates the installation of further technologies. Vodafone, which cooperates with ILG external advertising, brings the fiber optic connection and ensures the required radio technology. In a specially manufactured concrete base, three 5G antennas from Ericsson are housed, which offer a network with download speeds of up to 500 Mbit/s within a radius of around 400 meters. That sounds like a real gain for mobile communication!
experiences and future prospects
Michael Jungwirth, a member of the Vodafone management, believes that the search for new mobile radio locations in city centers is often a challenge. The positive experiences from Düsseldorf, where over 100 mobile phone locations in advertising columns have been realized since autumn 2021, are promising. In Düsseldorf, almost 6,000 connections run through the 5G advertising columns every day. And that's the beginning!
The competition does not stop. Telefónica Germany tests innovative approaches in Frankfurt, Cologne and Hanover and uses street lamps for the installation of transmitters. Deutsche Telekom is similar and integrates advertising columns as mobile phone antennas, for example in Berlin. In addition, some telephone booths that are no longer required are converted into radio stations - old technology is rethought here!
5G expansion in Germany
Vodafone not only started a big offensive in Stuttgart. In the second quarter of 2025, the company opened over 500 new construction sites and installed additional antennas for LTE and 5G at almost 900 locations. A total of over 1,400 construction projects to expand their own network were completed, with 180 measures being taken to avoid LTE totes. It is no coincidence that about 50 percent of the German population now have access to the 5G SA network from Vodafone
The large 5G expansion has been an issue in Germany since summer 2019. Vodafone was the first provider to be active in this area and has made considerable progress since then. The Federal Network Agency has already given the 5G advertising pillars a location certificate, which supports the efforts to provide nationwide care. The goal is obvious: more network stability and better reception options, especially in urban areas!
In order to remain attractive in rural regions, network operators try to position 5G as a DSL alternative, although there are still some hurdles in the implementation. Technical challenges as well as high costs for frequency auctions and the infrastructure continue to increase companies. But the constant efforts show that the struggle for innovative mobile phone technology is more hot than ever!
Finally, it can be said that the development of 5G in Germany is both exciting and challenging. Both Vodafone and other providers show that they are ready to take the initiative and find innovative solutions. It remains to be seen how the situation will develop, but one thing is clear: there is definitely something in the air here!
