Moldova: opportunities for investors in the digital and green sector!
The small Balearic state of Moldova, located between Romania and Ukraine, is becoming increasingly important as an attractive market for investors in the areas of technology, industry and renewable energies. At the moment everything indicates that Moldova is in the fast lane and benefits from state-supported incentives and an upcoming EU integration while the business world blooms. According to ainvest.com, the country offers an innovative environment and low market saturation, which makes it particularly tasty.
The Moldova government has formulated ambitious goals with the state aid program for industrialization (2024–2028). This program specifically addresses six strategic sectors, including electronics, chemicals, automotive components, textiles as well as construction and food production. Grants and tax exemptions are available for investments that are over 10 million MDL (around 500,000 euros). Small companies in particular can even cover up to 75 % of project costs through government support. With a budget of 100 million euros, it is expected that the contribution of the manufacturing sector to GDP by 2028 will increase from currently 8.2 % to 11.5 %.
strong focus on technology and IT
A central element of the Moldavian economy is the IT sector, which is supported by IT Park, founded in 2016. Here, companies benefit from a flat tax rate of 7 % to sales and VAT exemptions to exported IT services. ainvest.com reports that IT Park was able to record a remarkable annual increase in sales of 500 million euros in 2022. Microsoft or Oracle have already found their way here, and the simplified accounting and the faster granting of residence permits via IT visa programs make the whole thing even more attractive for international talents.
The Moldovanians have not only emerged in the IT area, but also in the agricultural sector, where the country has been one of the top 20 global producers and exporters of fruits and vegetables in recent years, especially apples, apricots and plums. As can be seen in the upcoming event, the Moldova Business Week 2025, the focus on digital, sustainable and regionally integrated economy is increasingly promoted to strengthen international economic relations. The event will take place from September 15th to 19th, 2025 in Chișinău and other regions of Moldova. Managing managers, investors and business associations are cordially invited to exchange ideas about the latest developments and success stories in the country.
sustainable energies in the spotlight
Another area in which Moldova is making great progress is the renewable energy industry. The aim is to double the capacity by 2030, which should take place in particular through wind, solar and biomass projects. The Soroca-Solarfarm, with a capacity of 100 MW, and the expansion of the hydropower plant on the Dnister are just two key projects that underpin the country's ambitions. As the reports of the Europa.eu show, the European Commission and Moldova have a comprehensive two-year strategy Energy independence and resilience agreed, which, among other things, provide for decoupling Russian energy sources.
by 2025, Moldova will be supported with 250 million euros to improve energy safety and to promote integration into the EU energy market. As part of this communication, important steps are taken to relieve consumers and mobilize sustainable sustainable investments. In terms of diversification, Moldova has already made progress, especially in the diversification of gas deliveries in order to reduce the dependency on Russian raw materials.
Although Moldova has some challenges such as corruption- the country occupies the 76th place of 180 at the Transparency International Index- and the dependence on fossil fuels, there are still diverse opportunities for smart investments, especially in the sectors IT and renewable energies as well as the production and agricultural sector that benefits from tax reliefs. Moldova has all cards in hand to convince as an attractive location in international competition and attract new capital.
