Tajikistan relies on digital agriculture: away into the future!

Tadschikistan, Tajikistan - Tajikistan makes snapping in the agricultural sector: digitization is very important! With fresh support for international organizations and private actors, the country takes the step into the digital future of agriculture. An important partnership was closed with the United Nations' Nutrition and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in order to promote digital destinations in the agricultural sector. President Emomali Rahmon has approved the official strategy for digitization of the agricultural sector - a clear proof of the government's determination of promoting the agricultural reform and putting modern technologies into practice.

This advance is part of a five -year timetable that ranges from 2025 to 2030 and aims to introduce advanced technologies. Jasnig Anvari, deputy minister of agriculture, underlines the government's obligation to form agricultural reforms and implementing digital technologies. Through the expansion of the physical infrastructure, Tajikistan plans to massively support the digital hazeling strategy and at the same time increase the digital competence of farmers. In addition, the farmers are given access to weather and malware, which improves traceability and transparency in the supply chains. The FAO will accompany this process and monitor annually to ensure compliance with the set goals.

The digital revolution for small farmers

But what about the small farmers? You have a central role in the digital transformation process. A comprehensive study that was carried out from September to December 2024 in cooperation with the Center for Sociological Research "Zerkalo" has illuminated the difficult conditions of the small farmers in Tajikistan. This study examined the interaction of small farmers with information and communication technologies (ICT) and focused on consciousness, use, access barriers and the perceived advantages of technologies. Over 1,400 small and medium-sized Dehkan farms were included in the study, which has provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities of digitization in agriculture.

As the FAO emphasizes, ICT's transformative potential in agriculture is enormous. Therefore, an important focus is to improve access to digital tools in rural areas in order to promote productivity and sustainable practices. In order to achieve this goal, a workshop was organized that presented the most important results of the study and formulated practical recommendations to promote ICT acceptance. This is intended to enable a targeted intervention by the FAO and the government of Tajikistan to support agricultural development.

The digital transformation can significantly increase the effectiveness of agricultural companies. From IoT and sensors to the use of data analyzes - the possibilities are almost endless. Regional projects, such as Atlas and Demeter, are already supporting valuable research and innovation projects to improve agriculture.

Despite all the advantages, digitization also contains challenges. Access to modern technologies in particular often remains a problem in rural areas. A lack of awareness and lack of training offers can lead to many farmers the advantages that digital tools offer, cannot recognize or use.
