Morocco starts 5G tender: full of reception up to the 2030 World Cup!

Digitization is picking up on speed, and Morocco is in the process of positioning itself as a pioneer in the region. With the recently launched tender for 5G licenses by the national telecommunications regulating authority (Annt), the kingdom takes up the next step in mobile phone technology. Operators are invited to submit their suggestions for the construction and operation of these future networks. A special focus is on the commercial start in November 2025, which leaves little time up to the African football championship (AFCON). This strategy will not only promote access to modern technology, but also strengthen the country's entire digital ecosystem.

The vision of the Anrt for the 5G spread is ambitious: By the end of 2025, 25% of the population should have access to 5G, and it should already be 70% by 2030. The first steps aim at large urban centers, decisive economic zones and innovation centers. This means that in particular, universities, research centers and industries such as the automotive and aviation industry will benefit from this fast network technology. This initiative is part of the national plan "Digital Morocco 2030", which also includes the connection of 6,300 public administrations by 2026 and 5.6 million households by 2030

strategic partnerships and investments

A crucial building block for the implementation of this ambitious plan are strategic partnerships. Maroc Telecom and Inwi have already founded two joint ventures to create the necessary infrastructure. Among these partnerships, Fiberco, which wants to install 1 million fiber optic connections within two years, as well as the Towerco, who wants to build a total of 2,000 telecommunications towers by 2028 and a total of 6,000 towers by 2033. With an estimated cost of 4.4 billion MAD ($ 440 million), this investment program has the potential to significantly accelerate and optimize national 5G coverage.

Another aspect that the Anrt focuses on is the improvement of the regulatory standards to ensure comprehensive coverage and high quality standards. And the advantages of the economy should not be underestimated: International studies show that a 10% increase in mobile broadband penetration can increase gross domestic product by up to 2.5%.

technological aspects of 5G

As explained by the Federal Office of Safety in Information Technology, 5G application scenarios enables this type of mobile communications to be covered beforehand. With the structure of the required infrastructure, new technologies and services are to be created that can offer considerable added value both in the commercial sector and in private households. Regardless of whether it is about the optimization of traffic management, the expansion of smart homes or the increase in efficiency in factories - 5G has the potential to revolutionize many areas of our lives.

An important share of the 5G introduction in Morocco was designed with a view to upcoming major events such as the 2030 FIFA World Cup in cooperation with Spain and Portugal. It is urgently needed to optimize and expand the infrastructure so quickly that the host cities are fully covered by 2030.

Morocco is ready to enter the next digital era. With a clear strategy, extensive investments and a focus on new technologies, the kingdom will not only set its own standards, but also rise to regional leadership in digital innovation. The course are set - now it is to be hoped that the plan will also be implemented as successfully as it is designed.

Stay up to date with developments in the digital world, because a lot will happen here in the coming years!
