Alarming cyber security gaps in industry: Where are we in 2025?
In the digital age, cyber threats in industry are no longer uncommon. The latest study in particular the Global Industrial Cybersecurity 2025 Published by Forescout and carried out by TakePoint Research, illuminates the current situation and shows that many companies are in an industrialization in a dilemma.
Interestingly, 44 percent of the industrial companies surveyed state that they have effective real-time cyber transparency. However, almost 60 percent cannot classify their OT/IoT threat detection as reliably. This brings up the discrepancy between claim and reality: while half feel safe, most others fight with basic security gaps.challenges in the cybersecurity climate
The report shows that the rapid digitization and the associated increase in connectivity bring many opportunities, but at the same time also increase the cyber risk exponentially. Over 50 percent of the organizations perceive supply chain threats and cybercrime as the greatest security challenges. The survey illuminates that only 17 percent of companies can report sophisticated OT security practices, while 64 percent categorize their cybersecurity maturity as fundamental, which often means manual processes and fragmented visibility.
The study surveyed a total of 236 managers from the areas of OT and automation between January and March 2025. There are some sobering figures: Over 33 percent of companies need more than 90 days to remedy threats, and 63 percent need more than 30 days for the management of their threats due to inadequate metrics and maintenance. In fact, 57 percent of companies use more than three different tools to monitor their IT, OT and IoT environments.
according to an analysis of Forescout The overload is also reflected in the labor -intensive tasks: Almost half of the companies are bumping to prioritize weaknesses (49 percent) and risk reduction (44 percent).
the view of the future
The situation must be taken seriously: another survey, the OT+IoT Cybersecurity Report 2024 The cyber security company Onekey has been published, shows that the number of networked IoT devices rose from 12.3 billion in 2020 to over 15.1 billion in 2023 and should grow to around 27 billion by 2025. This rapidly growing number of devices not only increases the potential for innovation, but also for cyber attacks.
The protection of these systems lags behind significantly. Only 46 percent of IT managers surveyed are convinced that industry is sufficiently protected against cyber attacks. Less than a third is familiar with the relevant regulations and standards for cyber security. Jan Wendenburg, CEO of OneKey, warns that many manufacturers have difficulty finding legal requirements adequately. Nevertheless, it remains essential that companies implement all the necessary measures to ensure their cyber security.
The challenges are diverse, but the awareness of cyber risks in industry is crucial to effectively counter the upcoming threats. In view of the geopolitical tensions, it becomes clear that integrated security approaches are not only desirable, but also indispensable.
