Treasure from the depth: Endurance wreck live at the Goodwood Festival!

What's new in the field of maritime discoveries? The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust (fmht) presented recently an exciting disclosure on the Goodwood Festival 2025. Maritime history appreciated, but also a look into the future of marine technology - all as part of the Future Labs Installation.

What is behind it? The focus is on the discovery of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s legendary ship, the Endurance, which has sunk deep in the Weddellmeer under Antarctic. FMHT organized and finance the Endurance22 Mission, which discovered the Wrack 2022. This mission not only localized the wreck, but also scanned it in detail, filmed and digitized. And best: For the first time, visitors can interact themselves based on these technologies and explore the wreck.

an interactive experience

What is offered to visitors? The exhibition includes a 3D-printed model of the Endurance, which is based on precise scandates, and an interactive 3D digital model, which enables visitors to rotate, zoom and artifacts that lie on the deck. In addition, for the first time, how advanced technologies such as shift imaging and AI processing led to one of the most detailed wreck models.

The technologies, including laser scanners and high-resolution underwater images, not only apply in the history of seafaring, but they also have potential in diverse areas such as marine floor mapping, marine biology, offshore energy and nature conservation. In this way, dangerous high -risk zones can be safely explored without relying on human divers.

The importance of discovery

But not only technologically, the expedition has a lot to offer. On November 5, 2024, the book "Endurance: The Discovery of Shackleton’s Legendary Ship" appears by Dr. John Shears and Nico Vincent was written. This book offers deep insights into the Endurance22 mission and contains exclusive interviews, digital scans and underwater photos of the wreck. The challenges that the expedition in the Antarctica had to master, such as the antarctic ice and the use of autonomous underwater vehicles, is also discussed here

When the 3-mast sailing ship Endurance dropped on November 22, 1915, it did a dramatic way when it was crushed by ice. Her wreck was discovered in impressively good condition on March 5, 2022, which makes the mission particularly valuable. Particularly interesting finds such as a ship wheel and artifacts are also part of the history.

non -profit work and global Outreach

The FMHT not only has the maritime story in mind, but is also involved in the education area. The Endurance22 mission was able to reach over 33,000 students worldwide and sensitize it to environmental protection and marine biology. The effects of global warming on the Antarctic, including the Kaiser penguins, are also discussed.

The achievements of the FMHT are really remarkable. The organization was founded in 2014 to maintain and promote the maritime history of the Falkland Islands. With initiatives such as the search for the wreck of the endurance and the commitment of so many partners, they manage to combine both the past and the future of the maritime discovery in an exciting way.

As I said, a lot is happening in the area of maritime technology and exploration. The possibilities that result from these discoveries are large and promising. Deep Ocean Search
