Denmark starts the quantum age with 80 million euros!
Kopenhagen, Dänemark - Denmark takes an exciting course in the world of quantum computing technologies. With an impressive investment of 80 million euros, the Danish export and investment fund (EIFO) and the Novo Nordisk Foundation announced the establishment of a new initiative called Qunorth. So reports that the goal of this initiative is to go to a guide in the To make quantum technology.
The quantum computer called Magne is at the center of this ambitious plan. This extraordinary computer, which will be accessible for academic and industrial purposes across Europe, is expected to be the most powerful commercial quantum computer in the world. The project receives support from the cooperation with Microsoft and Atom Computing, whereby Magne is the first functioning level 2 quantum computer system that works with logical qubits.
The vision behind Qunorth
The Novo Nordisk Foundation has already invested over 2 billion DKK (around 270 million euros) in quantum research, as CEO MADS confirmed Krogsgaard Thomsen. With Qunorth, Eifo and the foundation pursue the goal of strengthening the Danish and Nordic quantum ecosystem. Qunorth will be based in Copenhagen and will work with a small team of around 10 employees. All about security emphasizes that the initiative should create a center for quantum innovation in Northern Europe.
The quantum world is diverse and Magne is prepared to provide impressive achievements. It will consist of 50 logical and more than 1,200 physical qubits. If everything goes according to plan, the construction of the computer will begin in autumn 2025, and Magne should be ready for operation by the end of 2026.
The challenges of quantum research
The initiative comes at a critical time, since Denmark and the Nordic countries run the risk of losing their strong position in quantum research. Limited access to modern quantum computers could increase these risks, as the Qunorth initiative tries to prevent. The aim is to increase the competitiveness of the quantum industry in the region and at the same time to help research and industry when using Magne.
Another important aspect is the cooperation with Microsoft, which are not only involved in the development of the quantum computer, but will also set up four doctoral and postdoc positions. This enables a close connection between science and practical application, which should be a decisive advantage in the process of quantum innovation.
Magne, inspired by the Nordic mythology, bears the name of the son of Thor, which does justice to his powerful nature. It remains to be seen how successful Qunorth will be, but the first steps are promising. The official presentation of the program is planned for a Nordic quantum event in autumn 2025, so exciting times are imminent.
