Meta presents groundbreaking VR prototypes: See more than ever before!
Redmond, Washington, USA - The future of Virtual Reality (VR) will be exciting! On July 19, 2025, Meta Reality Labs Research presented three new headset prototypes to explore technology limits. This announcement came right in front of the renowned computer graphics conference Siggraph, and it is clear that Meta, formerly known as Facebook, continues to continue their vision for the immersive internet. The new prototypes show how serious Meta is with the development of innovative technologies and where the journey for the entire XR industries could go.
The first two prototypes stand out due to an impressive horizontal field of view of about 180 degrees. For comparison: The Apple Vision Pro only offers 100 degrees, while Meta Quest 3 has 110 degrees. This means that METAS WIDE FOV prototype shows more of the real environment than the quest 3, which makes a massive difference for immersive applications. Both devices are housed in a compact housing and have highly developed cameras with 80 megapixels, which take up 60 frames per second. For comparison: the Meta Quest 3 only has 4 megapixels and the Apple Vision Pro about 6.5 megapixels. What a technical development!
The performance of the new prototypes
The first prototype is aimed exclusively at VR users, while the second offers both VR and mixed reality applications. One of the most impressive technical properties is the pixel density: the third prototype reaches a pixel density of 90 ppd (pixels per degree), which exceeds the threshold for the so-called "retina resolution". For comparison: Meta Quest 3 has 25 PPD and Apple Vision Pro 34 ppd. In the past, a prototype called Butterscotch 55 PPD - so something is happening in the world of pixel densities! In addition, the third prototype has a high light thickness of 1,400 nits, which significantly improves the visual experience.
The prototypes were called "time machines" by Meta to explore the technology properties of the next generation. While immediate commercial availability is not to be expected, the developments show the commitment of META to expand the technical penetration in the area of XR. Meta has changed significantly since Oculus took over in 2014 and is now focusing on the construction of the meta persons, where immersive technologies are to become everyday life. The research group behind Meta Reality Labs, which Michael Abrash is headed, is working on a variety of projects that all aim to improve interactive user experience.
technological trends in view
If you look beyond metas developments, current trends show that the immersive Internet, which goes beyond flat websites, is becoming increasingly important. Technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are increasingly being used to create interactive and collaborative experiences. According to the Forbes, the term "immersive internet" will be more common than "metaversum" in the future. In addition, great attention is paid to generative AI, which is particularly relevant for the design of digital environments and characters.
The development of haptic glove technologies that make users feel like acting in a virtual environment is one of the exciting progress. In the education sector, too, VR training results in new opportunities that enable faster learning and higher self-confidence when using real skills. Products such as META Quest 3 and potential Apple AR glasses position themselves as central players in the industry.
In the coming years, progress in XR technology will create further space for innovations that ultimately communicate, learn and even buy our way of communicating. The best thing about it? It will be exciting to observe how Metas develop new prototypes and the direction of the entire industry.
